Calibration of atomic-force microscope tips

چکیده
Images and force measurements taken by an atomic-force microscope ( AFM) depend greatly on the properties of the spring and tip used to probe the sample’s surface. In this article, we describe a simple, nondestructive procedure for measuring the force constant, resonant frequency, and quality factor of an AFM cantilever spring and the effective radius of curvature of an AFM tip. Our procedure uses the AFM itself and does not require additional equipment,

Lateral force calibration of an atomic force microscope with a diamagnetic levitation spring system
A novel diamagnetic lateral force calibrator D-LFC has been developed to directly calibrate atomic force microscope AFM cantilever-tip or -bead assemblies. This enables an AFM to accurately measure the lateral forces encountered in friction or biomechanical-testing experiments at a small length scale. In the process of development, deformation characteristics of the AFM cantilever assemblies un...

Quantitative force measurements performed using the atomic force microscope AFM inherently rely on calibration of the AFM cantilever spring constant to convert the measured deflection into a force. Here, we examine the effect of cantilever tilt and induced torque on the effective normal spring constant resulting from variable placement of the tip probe, as is frequently encountered in practice....

One of the major challenges in understanding and controlling friction is the difficulty in bridging the length and time scales of macroscale contacts and those of the single asperity interactions they comprise. While the atomic force microscope (AFM) offers a unique ability to probe tribological surfaces in a wear-free single-asperity contact, instrument calibration challenges have limited the ...
متن کاملLength control and sharpening of atomic force microscope carbon nanotube tips assisted by an electron beam
We report on the precise positioning of a carbon nanotube on an atomic force microscope (AFM) tip. By using a nanomanipulator inside a scanning electron microscope, an individual nanotube was retrieved from a metal foil by the AFM tip. The electron beam allows us to control the nanotube length and to sharpen its end. The performance of these tips for AFM imaging is demonstrated by improved late...
متن کاملAutomated wafer-scale fabrication of electron beam deposited tips for atomic force microscopes using pattern recognition
We present an automation technique for the growth of electron beam deposited tips on whole wafers of atomic force microscope cantilevers. This technique uses pattern recognition on scanning electron microscope images of successive magnifications to precisely place the tips on the cantilevers. We demonstrate the capabilities of the working system on a four-inch wafer of microfabricated small can...
